Steamtown National Historic Site

Steamtown National Historic Site

A steam locomotive excites the senses: you can feel the heat from the firebox, hear the bell and whistle, smell the hot steam and oil, feel the ground vibrate under your feet, see the one-ton drive rod push the drive wheels around, hear the chuff-chuff-chuff, experience the past.

Steamtown National Historic Site preserves an era that slipped from public consciousness virtually unnoticed. Today, you can relive that era as the fire-breathing behemoths lumber back to life. The cinders, grease, oil, steam and people of railroading have returned.

Directions: Plane - Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport (AVP) at Avoca serves the greater Pocono Northeast.

Car - From I-84W or I-80E, take I-380N to I-81S, Exit 185 (Central Scranton Expressway). From I-476N or I-80W, take I-81N to Exit 185. From I-81N, Exit 185. Turn left at first traffic light, then follow Lackawanna Avenue past seven traffic signals. Left hand turn from Lackawanna Avenue to Cliff Street.

Bus - Both Greyhound Lines and Martz Trailways service Scranton. The bus terminal serves both companies, and is located on Lackawanna Avenue across from the main vehicle entrance to the Park. The most convenient walking access, however, is via the Mall at Steamtown, also across the street from the bus terminal.

Public Transportation - COLTS (County of Lackawanna Transit System) provides local bus service to Scranton and all of Lackawanna County. (570) 346-2061 or 876-1256 for schedules and more information.
