New York, NY, United States (4E) - Famous art critic Robert Hughes has passed away at age 74 Monday in New York after a long illness.

His wife, Doris Downes Hughes, confirmed his death. Meanwhile, Australian Liberal MP Malcolm Turnbull posted on his Twitter account, "Robert Hughes, critic, historian, fisherman, has died today in New York City. Farewell my dear old mate. Rest in peace."

The Sydney-born Hughes, aside from one of his bestselling works, "The Fatal Shore," is well-known as an art critic in Time magazine for over three decades.
