-- Paula David - Fourth Estate Cooperative Reporter London, United Kingdom (4E) - British comic actor Eric Sykes passed away at 89 Wednesday following a brief illness. Nora Farnes, Sykes' manager, confirmed the death saying, "Eric Sykes, 89, star of TV, stage and films, died peacefully this morning after a short illness. His family were with him." Sykes started out as a radio script writer and even tried his hand at comedy, finding modest success. He rose to fame through writing and acting in television sitcoms in the 1950s until the 80s. His well known sitcom was "Sykes and A" along with Hattie Jacques, which ran for 125 episodes. The Oldham-borne actor also appeared in films, including "The Others" alongside Nicole Kidman and in the box-office hit "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire." Aside from film and television, Sykes was also an acclaimed on stage, appearing in plays by He was a prolific writer. Apart from the many scripts he has co-written with various writers for television and film, he has written two novels, "The Great Crime Of Grapplewick" (1997) and "Smelling Of Roses" (1998). Sykes, who was awarded an OBE in 1986 and a CBE in 2004, is survived by his wife and four children.
