Ex-Romanian Prime Minister attempts suicide

-- Fourth Estate Cooperative Staff

Bucharest, Romania (4E) - Former Romanian Prime Minister Adrian Nastase on Wednesday attempted suicide by shooting himself in the neck when police came to take him to prison.

The incident happened hours after country's Supreme Court upheld a two-year sentence on the ex-premier over corruption charges. During his four-year term from 2000, Nastase was convicted of illegally accumulating $1.9 million for his 2004 election campaign - a charge he denied and claimed was politically motivated.

Doctors treating him said that he is out of danger. Nastase ally, current Prime Minister Victor Ponta, visited the ex-leader in the hospital.
