-- Paula David - Fourth Estate Cooperative Reporter London, United Kingdom (4E) - Spanish painter Joan Miro's Peinture (Etoile Bleue) sold for $37 million Tuesday at Sotheby's London. An anonymous bidder, fighting off three other rivals, bought the record-setting artwork via telephone. The painting was last sold in 2007, three times lower than Tuesday's auction price, which is the highest so far this year for an auctioned artwork. The painting, which translates as "Painting (Blue Star)" is part of Miro's "dream paintings" cycle and was expected to fetch around £15 million or about $23 million. Helena Newman, head of Sotheby's impressionist and modern department, said of the painting, "At a time of unprecedented demand for the best examples of 20th-Century art, this masterpiece by Miró not only shattered the previous record for the artist (set only four months ago at £16.8 million), but also made more than three times the price it achieved five years ago." "Blue Stars" was part of impressionist and abstract art sale alongside works by Picasso, Kandisky, Bonnard, Monet, Giacometti and De Chirico, which continues on Wednesday at Christie's in London.
