|
-- Paula David - Fourth Estate Cooperative Reporter Los Angeles, Calif., United States (4E) - Award-winning actor Johnny Depp will receive the 2012 MTV Generation Award on Sunday during the MTV Movie Awards at the Gibson Amphitheatre. Depp will be recognized for his contributions to the film industry, by rock icons Steve Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith. In a statement, MTV President Stephen Friedman stated, "Johnny Depp is a fearless, once-in-a-generation talent with a chameleon-like ability to inhabit any role. With years of astonishing performances, Johnny has truly earned this Generation Award, and we look forward to honoring him with a can't-miss tribute at this year's Movie Awards." Friend Steve Tyler told Fox 411 earlier this month, "Johnny is a great musician and many people don't know that, he plays piano, guitar, he knows his music. We are actually in Tim Burton's old studio right now called Swinghouse doing our new Aerosmith album, and Johnny will come down every other night. And then when we are done recording I go up to Johnny's house and I play him stuff and ask if it is any good... He gives me (honest feedback)." According to MTV.com, "the MTV Generation Award is the Movie Awards' highest honor, acknowledging an actor who can be counted on to engage the MTV audience with everything he or she does." Depp has come a long way since "Edward Scissorhands" and "21 Jump Street." He has had numerous box-office hits and an Academy Award nomination for his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the "Pirates of the Caribbean." Past recipients of the MTV Generation Award are Reese Witherspoon, Sandra Bullock, Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Mike Myers, Tom Cruise and Jim Carrey.
