U.S.-Mexico Drug Tunnel Found, 40 Tons Of Marijuana Seized

San Diego, CA, United States (AHN) -- U.S. federal agents have discovered a tunnel used for smuggling drugs between Tijuana, Mexico, and San Diego, California, and 20 tons of marijuana stored in three warehouses connected by the passageway.

Tuesday's discovery by agents of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) followed the interception of a tractor-trailer loaded with 10 tons of marijuana at a checkpoint in Temecula. A couple driving the 53-foot trailer was arrested.

The 1,800-foot tunnel is the 75th discovered on the U.S.-Mexico border since 2006, according to John Morton, director of ICE. The lighted and ventilated passageway connects two warehouses east of the Otay Mesa border crossing, a two-story building in Tijuana and another warehouse in San Diego.

The building on the Mexican side yielded four tons of marijuana and the warehouses on the U.S. side contained the rest of the seized drugs.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration believes that the 25 tons of marijuana in the warehouses were the biggest ever seized in California. The estimated street value of the seized marijuana is $20 million.
