Christopher Meloni Leaving "Law & Order: SVU" In 2011

Los Angeles, CA, United States (CNS) -- Christopher Meloni is said to be leaving the NBC crime drama "Law & Order: SVU" after the show completes its 12th season in 2011. The 48-year-old actor has been playing Detective Eliot Stabler in the show since 1999.

Australian newspaper The Courier-Mail has quoted the actor as saying, "I thin 12 years is enough, a good number. The writers will have fertile ground to figure out how to arc [Eliot] out to anoher place - whether it's this world or the next."

Meloni, who is believed to earn $350,000 per episode, said he will take his final bow in season 12. Once he gets off the show, he wants to make "guerilla-style sleeper" films.

Mariska Hargitay, who plays Meloni's on-screen partner Detective Olivia Benson, will stay even after Meloni leaves.

She said, "It's been proven over and over to me that this (role) is the right thing for me to still be here," but she adds she isn't sure her character would take Eliot's departure lightly.

"I don't think she could be without him. She loves him, he's her other half."
