Los Angeles, CA, United States (CNS) -- After only 47 days in release, "Avatar" has officially surpassed "Titanic" as the highest grossing film in the U.S. of all-time. It surpassed the total domestic gross "Titanic" earned during its release in 1997 and 1998 of $600.8 million. "Avatar" now stands at $601.1 million after 47 days in release. "Titanic" earned $600 million over more than 280 days in release. "Titanic," released in December of 1997, had only grossed $311 million by the time it hit 47 days at the box-office. But "Avatar" stands to make even more. It just spent its 7th weekend at the top of the box-office and earned the highest-grossing seventh weekend ever, again beating "Titanic" for that record. It also saw an increase in ticket sales following its nine Oscar nominations announced Tuesday. "Avatar" is also the first movie to surpass over $2 billion at the worldwide box office. It's still playing on over 17,000 screens around the world. But not all of "Titanic"'s records are sinking to the bottom of the ocean. It's attendance (meaning tickets sold) is still higher and it still stands as the movie with the most consecutive weekends at #1 at the U.S. box office with 15. It also is still the #1 moneymaker in various markets.
