Costa Rican President Conracts Swine Flu

San Jose, Costa Rica -- Even politicians aren't immune from the global swine flu (H1N1) pandemic. On Tuesday, President Oscar Arias' office confirmed he has been diagnosed with swine flu and will take a break from his official duties until he recovers.

The 68-year-old Central American president is known for mediating peace efforts in neighboring countries during the late 1980's. His work earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1987 as well as the Albert Schweitzer Prize for Humanitarianism. Arias was reelected president in 2006.

Arias has been suffering from chronic asthma and was tested by doctors after his condition worsened. Now, the Costa Rican president will spend about a week in isolation being treated at his official residence.
