New York, NY -- A Nielsen report released Monday said the average American increased his television viewing hours in 2008 by 3.6 percent to 151 hours monthly from 145 hours in 2007.

The rise in viewing was attributed to watching from other technological devices beside the TV set. Watching online video through the Internet increased the viewing habit by three hours, while four hours were spent watching mobile videos on cellphones.

More hours spent in front of the computer screen was felt across different age groups. Adults in the age bracket 18 to 24 spent an average of five hours watching video online, those in the 25 to 34 age group logged four hours, those from 35 until 44 used up 3.2 hours, and Americans in the 45 to 54 age groups had 2.34 hours.

Seniors, or those 65 years old and above, spent an average of 207 hours in front of the traditional TV set, while teenagers, or those between 12 to 17, watched TV only an average of 10 hours monthly.

Apparently the favorite source of Internet video watching is YouTube. According to comScore, almost 100 million American televiewers watched 5.9 billion YouTube videos in December.
