(AHN) -- A 78-year-old legally blind man from northwest Iowa whose nickname is "The Hammer" bowled a perfect game in league play. Dale Davis pounded out 2 consecutive strikes for a 300 score Saturday evening, even though his vision is peripheral - he can't see straight ahead. For the past decade, Davis has suffered from from macular degeneration, a chronic eye disease, which prevents him from seeing see out of his left eye and limiting peripheral vision in his right eye. The perfect game at the Century Lanes bowling alley was the first there since at least 1984, when current owner Clem Ledoux took over. Ledoux told Sports Illustrated on Thursday: "He's got good coordination. He's got good timing. We've always kidded him that we think his bowling ball has eyes." Ledoux told SI that after Davis reached 10 strikes, the entire bar emptied out onto the lanes, rooting for him in his quest for the perfect game, which came off a roll-off where a right-hander strikes the left side of the head pin. Davis, 5 feet 8 and all of 115 pounds, took it all in stride. "It's a great sport. It's something the young, the old and the handicapped can do," Davis said Thursday, according to SI. "I guess I count as the old and handicapped."
