London, U.K. (AHN) -- Two Londoners who attempted to extort $100,000 (Å50,000) from a Royal Family member have been sentenced to five years imprisonment in the first publicized case of "Royal Blackmail" since 1891. BBC said Friday that Ian Strachan and Sean McGuigan were found guilty by the Central Criminal Court of trying to blackmail a member of the Royal Family by making public an eight-hour video of him allegedly taking drugs and performing oral sex on his aide. The duo, who both had previous criminal records, had initially tried to sell the video to the media last year. However, when no one bought their story, they turned to the royal himself. According to the Times, the royal was threatened with "menacing phone calls" and sent a fake contract between the extortionists and the News of the World - the publication where Strachan and McGuigan would supposedly expose the royal scandal. Undercover police posing as the royal family member's aide arrested the two in an entrapment operation at the Hilton Hotel in September. The trial lasted two-and-a-half weeks and involved some 30 witnesses. The Court took great pains not to reveal the identity of the royal family member involved. In handing down the verdict, presiding Judge Justice Cooke said: "This offense has been described as one of the ugliest and most vicious crimes in the calendar of criminal offenses, and was described in this court as a dirty, filthy and hideous crime," the Times reported. "It puts the victim in a position of fear. It puts the victim into a state of anxiety and torment," Judge Cooke further said. The court ruled that the convicts would have to serve half their prison terms before being eligible for parole.
