Study: Computer Keyboards Can Be Filthier Than A Toilet Seat

London, UK (AHN) -- Consumer magazine Which? has found that computer keyboards can be a home to bacteria that may cause food poisoning symptoms and stomach upsets.

Tests made on 33 keyboards at its office here showed four posed a health risk, with one being host to five times more germs than the office's toilet seats.

A microbiologist ordered it to be removed, isolated and cleaned after tests revealed it surpasses the recommended bacteria limits by 150 times.

"If you look at what grows on computer keyboards, and hospitals are worse, believe it or not, it's more or less a reflection of what's in your nose and in your gut," Dr Peter Wilson, a consultant microbiologist at University College London Hospital told BBC Radio. "Should somebody have a cold in your office, or even have gastroenteritis, you're very likely to pick it up from a keyboard."

People eating lunch at their workstation are among the causes of dirty keyboards.

A Which? survey also showed that 11 percent of people never cleaned their keyboard, 20 percent do not clean their mouse and 46 percent cleaned their keyboard less than once a month.
