Chicago, IL (AHN) -- David Blaine, 35, renowned street magician and endurance artist, broke the world record for holding his breath on Wednesday during a taping of the 'Oprah Winfrey Show.' Blaine, who failed his attempt at the record two years ago, held his breath for 17 minutes and 4 seconds, 32 seconds longer than the previous record, which was set in February. The BBC reported Blaine inhaled pure oxygen to get all the carbon dioxide out of his blood, then went into a meditative state as he was submerged into a sphere with 1,800 gallons of water. After setting the record and he told Winfrey it was a lifetime goal. Besides his style of street magic, where he uses pedestrians as an audience, Blane is known for pushing the limits of the human body. Over the years Blaine has enclosed himself in a six-ton block of ice for 63 hours, stood on a 22-inch in diameter platform 90-feet above New York's Bryant Park for 35 hours, and spent 44 days and nights suspended over the Thames River in a plexiglas box with no food. The late Christopher Reeves attended the stunt called Vertigo at Bryant Park in support of his friend. Reeves said in a video on Blaine's Website, "What this is about is sheer endurance. It's about mental discipline, physical discipline, and courage."
