American Artist Transforms Everest Trash into Art

-- One American artist has traveled to the top of the world to find inspiration. Jeff Clapp traveled to Nepal to collect the trash left behind by climbers on Mount Everest.

Nearly three years later, Clapp has turned his idea into a business - turning discarded oxygen containers into bells, bowls and Christmas ornaments.

Clapp said it's his way to inspire people to clean up their environment. It's a common practice among climbers on Mount Everest to dump gear to save weight on their descent down the mountain.

Now, there's a concerted effort to clean up the mountain. The government of Nepal requires that climbers pay a deposit that is forfeited if trash is left behind.

Clapp bought his oxygen cylinders from the Nepalese government, buying 132 of them for $7,000, and then shipped them back to Maine. He said when his supply is used up, he's going to travel back to Nepal and show the locals there how to make art using the cylinders so they can make money for themselves.
