Swimmers Flee Bare Foot As "Volcano" Erupts In Minnesota Hotel's Water Park

Duluth, MN (AHN) -- The hotel guests at the Edgewater Hotel and Waterpark in Minnesota had to run in their swimming trunks on Thursday after a fake volcano at the center of a swimming pool "erupted" giving out smoke.

The 20-foot-tall plastic volcano started emitting black smoke and flames at about 6:40 p.m. because of a malfunctioning of the internal speaker. The flames were put out by firefighters and an automatic sprinkler head mounted above the volcano. However, the entire volcano melted during the "eruption."

According to the West Central Tribune, Eric Markman, 8, of Sartell, Minnesota was paddling in the water park. The newspaper quoted him as saying, "I thought it was just the special effects."

The "shocked" guests were given blankets and directed to the nearby Perkins and Black Woods restaurants for complementary meals. The hotel staff also treated them to in-room ice cream Thursday night. No one was injured in the accident.
