Senator Fired Up About Non-Lobster

-- Sen. Olympia Snowe has asked that restaurants be banned from calling a certain kind of shellfish lobster as it has taken millions of dollars from Maine fisherman as well as deceived the public.

Many restaurants now use the term "Langostino Lobster," which was coined by the US Food and Drug Administration after customers sued a California-based restaurant for marketing lobster but serving langostino. The matter was settles in April without fault to the restaurant but the FDA still found it necessary to make the distinction.

But Snowe said that is not good enough. European langostino is considered lobster because of its claws but the South American langostino is debatable. She has asked the FDA to forbid restaurants from using "langostimo lobster" to sell their product.

Snowe said, "Langostino is not lobster, nor should it be marketed as such."

Kristen Millar of the Maine Lobster Promotion Council agreed saying she regards the shellfish as a pelagic crab. She said calling the langostino a lobster is an insult to Maine and the lobster industry.

The council also said Maine fishermen have suffered $44 million in losses thanks to the alleged mis-marketing of the langostino.
