Man Boarding Wild Animals In Home Gets Arrested

-- Steve Weinkseldaum was arrested on Tuesday as agents from the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals were led to his home on a tip that he was boarding wild animals.

According to an AP report, agent Roy Gross said, "It appeared to be like I was walking into a rain forest" in his home, because "he had alligators stacked up. He had plants growing. It was tight to walk."

The agents found many types of wild animals inside Weinkseldaum's home: nine alligators, one crocodile, a python snake, two eels, several iguanas, lots of lizards, several birds, fish and in the backyard he even had several emus as well.

He also had a tortoise in the house that was found laying in feces, which led agents to the animal cruelty charges, along with the fact that it is illegal to keep alligators or crocodiles in your home.

The man was described by fellow neighbors as an animal lover. He had a "turtle farm" located in his front yard that children visited. He also welcomed unwanted animals.

Weinkseldaum can be jailed for a maximum of one year and fined up to $1,000.
