Melbourne, Australia -- A traffic cop in Melbourne, Australia has fined a tram driver for speeding. The officer said the driver was running the tram at 57 kph in a 40 kph zone.

The Australian quotes a police spokeswoman as saying, "It's the first time that a member has detected a speeding tram. He said it was quite unusual." She said the offending driver was cooperative when he was stopped and given the ticket. "There was no animosity."

She said the driver was penalized with a $161 ticker including a three points deductions from his normal driver's license.

Yarra Trams spokesman Colin Tyrus said the driver also would be reprimanded by the company and is facing possible disciplinary actions for the incident.

He said, "There's no exception for tram drivers to the speed limit."
