-- After receiving complaints, an elderly woman was ordered by police to take down her garden gate sign.

About 30 years ago, the woman's late husband put up the sign, "Our dogs are fed on Jehovah's Witnesses" after getting a phone call from the group on Christmas Day.

Janet Grove, whose only dog is a Jack Terrier puppy, stated that the sign was put up as a gentle joke to keep Jehovah's Witnesses from coming to their door.

However, a member of the public did not take so kindly to the joke.

A police spokesman said, "we were informed by a member of the public who found the sign to be distressing, offensive and inappropriate. Officers attended the address and the sign was voluntarily taken down."
