Tokyo, Japan (AHN) -- Good news for people who have noisy neighbors. A Japanese court has sentenced a woman to a 20-month prison term after her neighbor accused her of inflicting injury by blasting rock music at her house for 2 1/2 years. Court spokesman Takanao Kawasaki said the woman Miyoko Kawahara, was sentenced Tuesday by the Osaka High Court, thus annulling an initial ruling by a lower court that had given her a one-year prison term. According to AP reports, the neighbors charged Kawahara was causing insomnia and headaches by playing loud dance music almost 24 hours a day on a portable stereo she had pointed at her neighbor's house, 20 feet away. Kawahara, 50, who comes from of Heguri in western Japan, was arrested in April 2005. Kyodo News agency quoted presiding Judge Hiroshi Furukawa as telling the court, "The defendant ignored calls by local authorities and continuously played music at a high volume for some 29 months." However, the local court, while handing down a longer prison term than a local court ruling had last April, said that Kawahara still had a hostile attitude toward the victim. The neighbor was convinced she would commit the crime again. The neighbor was diagnosed as having insomnia and headaches by doctors, which they attributed to the noise. Kawahara started blasting the music in November 2002 and continued until her arrest.
