Raleigh, NC (AHN) -- A California couple are facing federal charges after they allegedly harassed a flight attendant who asked them to stop their public displays of affection during a flight to Raleigh. Carl Warren Persing and Dawn Elizabeth Sewell are scheduled to go to trial Dec. 11 at the U.S. District Court in Wilmington.

The incident happened during a Sept.15 flight's layover in Phoenix. According to court documents, flight attendants saw Persing and Sewell kissing, embracing and "acting in a manner that made other passengers uncomfortable."

Their behavior prompted a flight attendant to direct the couple to stop. Initially the couple complied with the request, but they soon resumed during the flight from Phoenix to Raleigh.

When the flight attendant again asked the couple to stop their "overt" sexual activities, Persing and Sewell, instead, started giving verbal threats to the flight attendant who made the request and had refused to serve them alcohol.

Citing the affidavit filed against the couple, The Charlotte Observer reported that Persing was observed kissing Sewell near her breast and with his face pressed against Sewell's lower body.

Law enforcement officials were waiting for the couple when they arrived at Raleigh-Durham International Airport.
