Vatican City (AHN) -- Four new saints were added during a ceremony by the Pope. Pope Benedict XVI bestowed the honor in his first canonization ceremony in nearly a year. Mother Theodore Guerin established a Catholic college for women in Indiana. The first student was enrolled in 1841. Guerin was born in France in 1798 and turned a log cabin into a chapel with five other nuns. By the time she died in 1856, her order was in charge of schools and orphanages in Indiana. Bishop Rafael Guizar Valencia was also elevated to sainthood. The missionary risked his life to take care of the wounded during the Mexican Revolution, sometimes in disguises such as a street vendor or musician. Two Italians were also canonized during the ceremony. Rev. Filippo Smaldone pioneered education for the deaf and founded the Congregation of the Salesian Sisters of the Sacred Hearts before his death in 1923. Rosa Venerini advocated education for young girls in Italy. Before her death in 1728, she established the Congregation of the Holy Venerini Teachers and pushed to establish the first public schools for girls in Italy.
