Tokyo, Japan -- A Japanese man attempted to set a world record by reciting the mathematical number pi down to the 100,000th digit by memory in 16 hours. Pi is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter with an infinite number of decimal points.
Akira Haraguchi, a 60-year-old consultant, began Tuesday 9:00 am at a public conference hall in front of local officials and continued non-stop till 1:30 am.
He only took a 10-minute break every one to two hours.
"He had a special way to remember the numbers by thinking up names to accompany sets of digits," said an official in Chiba prefecture's Kisarazu city.
Haraguchi had already previously recited 83,431 digits. He will apply to the Guinness Book of World Records.
"I didn't feel anything particularly sensational. I just poured out what was in my mind. But I am happy about the achievement of 100,000 digits," Haraguchi told Kyodo News.
