Vienna, Austria (AHN) -- Austrian police found the well preserved body of a man who had died at his home in bed five years ago. His death had been undetected because his rent was automatically paid from his pension and neighbors did not complain of any strange smell from the apartment.

Franz Riedl had been in his late 80's and authorities said his body appeared to have "mummified."

"He had been frail and a woman had helped him," the husband of the apartment block's caretaker told Kurier, adding that, "We thought he had moved in with her or gone to an old people's home."

Police admit they could not confirm the date of his death but found schilling notes in the residence. It was the currency used in the country before the introduction of the euro on January 1, 2002.
