Quezon City, Philippines (AHN) -- Local authorities in Quezon City, Philippines are encouraging more hog raisers to collect scrap foods from households to feed their pigs after a successful pilot-testing of such programs in nine barangays (villages) in the city. Under the program implemented eight months ago, hog raisers conducted door-to-door collection of leftovers and kitchen waste in the community. The aim of the program is to reduce the amount of garbage generated by households and at the same time lessen the expenses of hog raisers by feeding the collected scrap foods to their pigs. The hog raisers knocked on doors to collect household waste, free of charge, in nine villages covered by the city's "No Segregation, No Collection," policy. The villages were Greater Lagro, Milagrosa, Dona Imelda, Loyola Heights, Damar, Socorro, Silangan, Paang Bundok and E. Rodriguez. The city's Environmental Protection and Waste Management Department said the villages registered a total daily waste diversion of 1,450.26 kilos, which is an impressive figure. Encouraged by the success of the program, the department said they are studying to expand the kitchen waste collection programs to other villages with no composting facilities. Among those targeted for expansion were the villages of Vasra, Bagong Pagasa, West Kamias, Fairview, Culiat, Tandang Sora, Mariana and Tatalon.
