Iraqi Prison Scandal Top P.R. Gaffe Of 2004

San Francisco, CA -- Donald Rumsfeld won't win any awards for how he handled the Iraqi prison issue. In fact, one public relations expert says it's a textbook example of how NOT to deal with scandal.

P.R. exec Max Kleinman has just released his annual list of the top public relations gaffes of 2004 and says Rummy ranks No. 1 on the dubious list for letting news of the scandal come out in "drips and drabs."

As Kleinman puts it, "Generally, it's best to put out all the bad news at once. Otherwise, the story just plays on and on."

Kleinman also gives low marks to the NBA for "tacitly approving its fans most outrageous behavior" and "practically begging" players like Indiana Pacers star Ron Artest to retaliate against any slight.

CBS News gets a P.R. blunder award for waiting two weeks before admitting documents used by Dan Rather in a story attacking President George W. Bush's National Guard Service were fake, as does Target for banning Salvation Army collectors at its stores.
