DUI Checkpoints Will Be Useless New Year's Eve

Los Angeles, CA -- Although there will be a lot of DUI checkpoints on the road this New Year's Eve, it still won't stop a massive wave of drunks from getting behind the wheel.

That's according to addiction expert Doug Thorburn, who also wrote the book, "Get Out of the Way!: How to Identify and Avoid a Driver Under the Influence" (Galt).

He says the increased amount of DUI checkpoints won't have "any affect" on the amount of drunk drivers on Friday (Dec. 31) because "whether it be New Year's Eve or just a regular weekend night, people will make up excuses to drive drunk."

In a way, the checkpoints provide encouragement for regular drunk drivers to commit the dangerous action, Thorburn says.

In his words, "Drunk drivers like to see what they can get away with and they love getting away with this stuff. They even brag about it at their next AA meeting."
