Springfield, MA -- This has been a big year for blogs. At least that's the word from the folks who put together the Merriam-Webster dictionary. More people requested the definition of the word "blog" on the Merriam-Webster website than any other word this year. For the record, a blog is defined as "a website that contains an online personal journal with reflections, comments and hyperlinks provided by the writer." Other popular words that needed definition this year included election-oriented terms like "incumbent," "electoral" and "partisan" while the war in Iraq inspired many readers to seek out the meanings of "insurgent," "sovereignty" and "defenestration." Many people also spent time online trying to figure out the meaning of words like "cicada," and "peloton," the main body of riders in a bicycle race. Finally, despite the abundance of stormy weather this year, a lot of people still need the dictionary to learn the meaning of the word "hurricane."
