Western Buffs Want U.S. Holiday For Cowboys

The Colony, TX -- America's western buffs aren't horsing around -- they want a national holiday dedicated to cowboys.

"American Cowboy" magazine has launched a campaign to devote a special day to cowboys as a symbol of "American courage, chivalry and can-do spirit."

Magazine editor Jesse Mullins says cowboys deserve credit for opening up the west for settlement and creating the "independent outlook" that is part of the American character.

Many people associate cowboys with white guys like Clint Eastwood but Mullins says "National Cowboy Day" is something all Americans could support since many cowboys were black or hispanic.

In his words, "The wild west was the original melting pot."

Mullins doesn't have an exact date in mind for "National Cowboy Day," but he hopes his campaign for the holiday inspires supporters to come up with a suitable date for the event.

One possibility: May 26 -- John Wayne's birthday.
