Volcano Causes Tourism To Erupt At Mt. St. Helens

Longview, WA -- The threat of a lava flow is bringing a flow of tourists to the Mount Saint Helens volcano.

The recent volcanic activity at the mountain has been responsible for an eruption of lookieloos, according to a spokeswoman for Weyerhaeuser Forest Products, the company located closest to the volcano.

Jackie Lang says visitation in the last month has increased 160 percent and sales are exploding at local gift stores for novelty T-shirts with the slogan "Got Ash?" and salt and pepper shakers which look like exploding volcanos.

Scientists don't think Mount St. Helens will erupt as violently as it did in 1980 but Lang expects the volcano will be a hot commodity with tourists through next spring when her company hosts a 25th anniversary of the 1980 eruption.

The big blast on May 18, 2005, is still in the works, but may feature a giant lava cake and geologically-appropriate music such as the Jimmy Buffett tune, "Volcano" or "Hot Lava" by the B-52s.
