Phoenix, AZ -- Lou Rawls has reason to sing these days -- he's now a doctor. This past Saturday (Aug. 28), the soul legend received an honorary doctorate from Wilburforce University in Dayton, Ohio, for his "life-long service to the education of historically disadvantaged populations" through his work with the United Negro College Fund. Rawls is thrilled that the university "laid the degree on me" and hopes it enlightens underprivileged kids to the value of the college education. It's not the only honor Rawls is receiving. He's also being given a lifetime achievement award on Sept. 12 at the Temecula Valley International Film and Music Festival. But Rawls isn't resting on his laurels. He's focused on the future, including the release of an upcoming Christmas album and the opening of the Lou Rawls Center for the Performing Arts, scheduled for October 29 at Florida Memorial College in Miami. Keeping focused on the future is a lesson the education advocate learned from baseball great Satchel Paige. In his words, "My motto is 'Don't look back. Someone might be gaining on you.'"
