Are U.S. Veterans Of Iraqi War Bound For The Streets?

Los Angeles, CA -- Homecoming could be bittersweet for the U.S. soldiers returning from Iraq -- in fact, many could find themselves living on the streets within a few years.

According to statistics compiled by the Weingart Center Veterans Program in Los Angeles, military vets are twice as likely as other adults to become homeless.

Veterans Program manager Richard Caines says he "sees a lot of similarities" between soldiers returning from Iraq and Vietnam vets, many of whom who are on the streets now after years of struggling with the impact of their years at war.

He fears that the young men and women serving in Iraq could come back to the U.S. "even more disaffected than the Vietnam vets" because of the way the war has divided the country.

To avoid the slippery slope into the streets, Caines says its important for Iraqi War vets to seek help as soon as they begin having problems readjusting to living as a civilian.
