New York, NY -- As a reverend, soul singer Al Green is used to singing the praises of God, but, soon, musicians will be singing his praises. The performing rights organization BMI has selected Green as its 2004 Icon Award winner and will be honoring him with an awards ceremony in Miami on August 27. Green ranks the honor "right at the top" of the many he has received and is excited to hear performers like Kanye West and Pharrell Williams sing his tunes at the ceremony. But while Green is an icon, he refuses to let it go to his head. As he puts it, "I'm not the star type with stars in his eyes. I don't need an entourage. My entourage is an angel looking down on me." Green is being honored for tunes like "Let's Stay Together," and "Here I Am," but says he has no plans to sing at the celebration saying, "They just told me to wear my tux and my patent leather shoes." Until then, Green will be keeping busy preaching at his church in Memphis, Tennessee, and working on a new album, tentatively titled "The Music Man."
