Atlanta, GA -- Men may make the big bucks in baseball, but a few ladies are stepping up to the plate to give ball-playing ladies a chance to make a buck.

The newly-formed Ladies Professional Fastpitch Association (LPFA) is putting together a 15-week tournament where teammates can take home some pay.

The tournament starts next April and LPFA Vice President Bobby Holley says salaries will range from $10,000 to $30,000.

Holley claims even the smallest salaries they are paying are, "...ten times the amount," of what the closest competing leagues pay their players.

The LPFA is holding the first of five tryouts starting Sept. 6 in Westminster, Maryland, to select 50 players to complement 34 pre-selected professionals to form six teams.

It's going to be hard to make the final cut though. Holley expects up to 1,000 ladies will come out for all five tryout dates.
