New York, NY -- Are you intimidated by household gurus like Martha Stewart? Well, they're not born knowing their way around the kitchen.

HGTV host Susie Coelho admits she made a lot of entertaining mistakes before she earned the right to be called a "home style guru."

Coelho -- who currently hosts "Outer Spaces" on the network -- admits she burned a lot of steaks in her home economics classes before she got the hang of cooking. She once cooked a steak that was so tough she couldn't "...get the knife through the meat."

Now she's shortening the learning curve for a few lucky losers who are willing to reveal their worst cooking blunders for a new contest.

Folks who submit essays on their worst kitchen disasters at maxwellhouse.com before Aug. 23 have a chance to visit Coelho in New York and learn first hand how to cook up a meal fit for a king without it being a royal pain.

But competition could be stiff. One of the applicants is a woman who accidentally combined two recipes at once and turned her mother-in-law's cake into a combination of fruity jam and shepherds pie.
