The Lunchbox Carries A Lot Of History

New York, NY -- The lunchbox doesn't just hold a thermos and sandwiches, it carries a lot of history to it.

According to a new book, "Lunchbox: Inside And Out" (Harper Collins), the traditional metal lunchbox favored by working class stiffs dates back to the 1880s.

But it wasn't until 1902 that the first kid-oriented lunch pail hit the market: It was shaped like a picnic basket and featured pictures of children playing.

Authors Jack Mingo and Erin Bennett say the lunchbox industry really got big in 1950 when an inspired executive at the Aladdin company slapped decals of popular TV cowboy Hopalong Cassidy on old lunchboxes and sold 600,000 within a year.

Other pieces of lunchbox lore sandwiched in the book....

-- The most popular lunchbox of all time is the Disney School Bus, a domed metal box, which sold 6 million between 1961 and 1973.

-- Dr. Suess was one of the few celebrities allowed to design his own lunchbox.

-- Finally, metal lunchboxes were popular until 1987, when parents groups started complaining they could be used as weapons.
