Jamie Foxx's Taxi Driver Training

Los Angeles, CA -- Jamie Foxx's latest movie role had him driving around in circles -- literally.

In "Collateral," Foxx takes on the role of a taxi driver who is forced to ferry around a hit man played by Tom Cruise.

Most of the movie takes place in the cab, and director Michael Mann wanted Foxx's driving skills to look authentic -- so he made the actor drive a taxi on countless laps around a racetrack.

According to the actor, "Michael said he needed me to have the feel of the cab, so driving it became second nature and not acting."

Foxx had a lot of fun learning how to handle the car at high speeds, but, ironically, the hardest time he had on the shoot was when he was behind the wheel and not driving.

For some scenes, the car was towed while the actors played their scenes, and Foxx says the director kept yelling at him for steering the wheel too much and staring blankly into the distance -- neither of which would happen if he were really driving.

"Collateral" opens in U.S. theaters August 6.
