War Inspires Singing Marine

Al Asad, Iraq -- An aspiring rock star from Kentucky is using the sights he's seen while serving as a U.S. Marine in Iraq as inspiration for his music.

Cpl. John C. Preston recently recorded one of his tunes in Iraq, and, after posting it on the website johnpreston.us, it's drawing attention from fans and record companies alike.

The song -- "Good, Good America" -- was inspired by a group of 60 Iraqi schoolgirls who began chanting "good, good America" after Preston's unit built a school for them, and seeks to paint a different picture of the Marines' efforts in Iraq.

In Preston's words, "I felt that we were finally doing something for the Iraqi people that they appreciated, and I wanted to convey to the American public what is really going on in Iraq."

The song includes the lyrics: "The war is over we won/ And soon you'll find freedom/ The children of your future come to us with praise."

Preston returns to the U.S. July 11 and his mother, Diana, says he plans to pursue a recording career when he leaves military service in September.
