Geneva -- One hand washes the other, but as a new study shows, some doctors in hospitals don't wash either hand. Health experts observed doctors at the University of Geneva Hospital in Switzerland and discovered they washed their hands only 57 percent of time before performing activities deemed "high risk" for spreading infections. Doctors washed their hands most often when a hand washing station was handy, but they didn't wash their hands as often when they had a busy workload with patients. Internists and medical students washed their hands most often, while surgeons, anesthesiologists and critical care physicians washed their hands least often. Researchers acknowledge that only one hospital was observed and that doctors in the U.S. may have different habits. Although the numbers leave a lot to be desired, researchers say doctors may have been on their best behavior because the knew they were being observed. The research appears in the latest issue of "Annals of Internal Medicine."
