|
San Diego, CA -- Improv comics are known for taking requests, but in San Diego they're taking bids -- as in auctions. Every Thursday and Friday, a group of comics meets for something called "Improvisauction," a show that combines improv comedy with auctions. The comics auction off real items but do it as characters in all sorts of different situations, such as a garage sale in the heart of Brooklyn where two cops try to break up the buying. Improvisauction organizer Spike Sorrentino says between three to six items are auctioned off at each show. As a result, many of the actors have been able to clear their closets of junk. In Sorrentino's words, "I was able to sell a Maltese Falcon statue for $80. It's not as much as I might have earned eBay but it was more fun." Currently, "Improvisauction" is only in San Diego but Sorrentino is planning to franchise the concept to improv groups all across the country.
