Los Angeles, CA -- How might Bilbo Baggins answer the riddle "When is a writer like a hobbit?" When he's J.R.R. Tolkien, of course. In fact, a two-page letter written by Tolkien where he compares himself to a hobbit is one of numerous documents up for auction at Bonhams & Butterfield auction house on June 28. The Tolkien letter is a thank you note to his friends George and Moira Sayer for letting him stay with them, which reads, in part: "I resemble a hobbit at any rate in being moderately and cheerfully domesticated, though no cook." Auctioneers expect the letter to fetch $7,000, In addition, the auction contains other rarities such as a lock of Andrew Jackson's hair and the journal of the man who received the hair from the ex-president as a memento while the two were on a ship together. Jackson's locks are valued at $6,000. Finally, an official copy of the grand jury indictment papers from the trial of accused hatchet murder Lizzie Borden is valued at $7,000. The complete collection can be found at bonhams.com
