Happy Meal Turns 25

Oak Brook, IL -- A McDonald's icon is turning 25 this year: The Happy Meal.

The kiddie-sized fast food staple first appeared on menus in 1979 and consisted of box resembling a toy chest which contained a meal and a circus wagon toy.

In honor of the anniversary, McDonald's will be making some changes to the Happy Meal in an attempt to -- in one executive's words -- "make the Happy Meal experience even happier."

Most of the changes involve switching out the greasy hamburgers and fried chicken for healthier food. For instance, in Australia, kids will be able to get toasted cheese and tomato sandwiches and raisins.

Tots in Great Britain are getting organic milk, and in France, kids will slurp on fruit smoothies and flavored water.

In addition to the food changes, McDonald's restaurants in Italy and the Netherlands are considering offering moms the service of special helpers to supervise kids, while stores in Canada and New Zealand may designate parking spots for moms so they can easily get in and out with a carload of crying kids.
