Marriage With An Asterisk

San Diego, CA -- The solution to the controversy over gay marriage may finally be solved, thanks to a bartender in San Diego.

With tongue firmly in cheek, Edwin Decker is proposing that the government come up with a new classification for gay marriage he calls "marriage with an asterisk."

Decker says the unions would allow gay couples to get hitched and have all the same legal rights as heterosexual couples -- but there's a catch.

He says gay marriages will be marked with an asterisk so that "bigots and homophobes will know that there is something different about them and may continue fearing and loathing them."

In his words, "It's win-win. Everyone gets something."

"Asterisking" may sound bizarre but it's not new. Decker says the U.S. used the same technique on freed slaves for many years and baseball officials tried the same trick on Roger Maris in 1961 when he broke Babe Ruth's single season home run record.
