Flash Lites: Rip 'N' Read Pop Culture Recap

New York, NY (WFN) -- There's nothing wrong with the Phantom Of the Opera that a 12-step program wouldn't help. That's the opinion of actor Gerard Butler, who plays the Phantom in the upcoming film version of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. Butler -- who has been clean and sober for eight years -- tells "Genre" magazine that he's thrown himself in front of cars and banged his head against walls and thinks "that's something that would certainly be expressed in the Phantom." "The Phantom Of The Opera" film -- which also stars Minnie Driver -- opens in limited release on Dec. 25.

MODENA, Italy -- It ain't over 'til the fat man sings: Luciano Pavarotti has announced he will end his career with a 40-city retirement tour that will take him everywhere from Buenos Aires to London. The hefty tenor plans to do two to three concerts per month on the tour, but hasn't decided yet when the final concert will take place.

GATES, N.Y. -- A rash of SpongeBob SquarePants kidnappings is sweeping across America. Thieves just can't keep their hands off the large inflatable SpongeBobs that have popped up on top of various Burger King restaurants as part of a promotion for the cartoon's sponge's new movie. According to a report in the Rochester "Democrat and Chronicle," between 50 and 100 of the large yellow balloons have been stolen so far. More than 4800 balloons were installed in Burger King restaurants throughout the U.S. for the promotion.

NEW YORK -- Production will begin this week on "Campus Girls," the female version of the 2003 popular comedy film "Old School." The sitcom will air on the women's cable channel, Oxygen, and feature late-thirtysomethings going back to college and living in the freshman dorms at a fictional Midwestern university.
