Lisa Marie Coffey, author of the book "What's Your Dosha, Baby?" (Marlowe & Company) uses the Indian health practice of Ayurveda to sort people into three doshas, or body types: vata, pitta and kapha.

Knowing a person's type can make it easy to shop for them.

For instance, since vatas tend to have dry skin and hair and are sensitive to touch and sound, good gifts for them include cashmere socks, noise-reducing headphones or anything exotic.

Pittas are average build, more muscular and business-minded. They are dominated by sight and love flashy jewlery, digital cameras or business items they can show off.

Finally, Coffey says kaphas are heavy set and big-boned, but laid back, sentimental romantics. Bath products, scented candles and family photo albums are ideal for these people.
