New York, NY (WFN) -- Puppies are popular gifts around Christmas time, but which breeds are most likely to be found under the Christmas tree this year?

Experts at "The New York Dog Magazine --" think "Cosmo" for Collies -- predict that mutts are going to be popular in the coming year.

Publisher Gregg Oehler says mutts, also referred to as mixed breeds, are the pick of the litter these days because dog owners are following the example of celebrities and adopting them at shelters.

Previously, Pugs and Boston Terriers were the cat's meow.

Oehler says in New York the mutt is already king, but elsewhere Labrador Retrievers are still at the top of the heap.

Oehler says in the old days, pound puppy owners would weakly answer, "I've got a mutt," when asked what type of dog they have. These days, he says people give an enthusiastic, "I've got a mutt!"
