St. Paul, MN (WFN) -- Florida's recent hurricanes may leave a void on your Thanksgiving table where the pecan pie usually sits. According to the American Phytopathological Society, pecan supplies are drastically low this year. Growers were already expecting a lower-than-usual supply, but the torrential rains and winds from the hurricanes destroyed 50 percent of Georgia's pecan crop and 80 percent of Alabama's. To make matters worse, the hurricanes brought diseases like Phytophtora shuck and kernel rot to the trees. According to University of Georgia pathologist Tim Brenneman, there should be enough pecans to meet consumer demand, but buyers will pay a premium for them. He says the next-closest nut to the pecan is the walnut, but being a southerner, he says, "They don't make walnut pies down here. I don't know about what they do in California." Brenneman says it could take roughly 10 years before newly-planted trees begin producing decent-sized crops.
