Skillinge, Sweden (WFN) -- A Swedish trombonist has done the impossible -- he's made ABBA sound funky. Nils Landgren -- who played with the pop band back in the 1970s -- spent the last 18 months recording hip-hop versions of ABBA tunes like "Take A Chance On Me," and "Dancing Queen," for a new CD, "Funky ABBA." It was a quest that he admits bordered on insanity and says ABBA leader Benny Andersson told him flat out it was "impossible" to make "ABBA sound funky." Landgren accomplished the feat by "stripping the material to nothing but the melodies" and, as a result, discovered "the songs were more intricate and complicated than expected." He says he enjoys the "a-ha factor" that occurs when he plays his renditions and audiences slowly figure out which song he is playing. Even better: He says Andersson enjoyed the new funky arrangements so much that he volunteered to play on the album.
